Weaving Baskets with Island Fibers
OmetepeVisit location →Learn to weave a small basket alongside a women's collective on Ometepe using banana and pita fibers.
Why this exists.
You weave, you talk, you weave.
Twenty years ago traditional basket weaving nearly disappeared on Ometepe. A group of women in the village of Balgüe decided to bring it back. Today there are seven of them, working three days a week in a community room next to the school. For a whole morning you sit with them, learn to prepare fiber, start the base and weave the walls of a small basket. There's a lot of talking. A lot of laughter. Coffee gets passed around. At the end of the day you take home your basket and share lunch at the long table.
