Night Kayak with Bioluminescence
OmetepeVisit location →Paddle Ometepe's bay on a new moon and watch the water light up with every stroke.
Why this exists.
Only on new moons. Only if the water is calm.
On certain moonless, still nights, Ometepe's southern bay lights up with bioluminescent plankton. Julio, a guide and biologist, monitors conditions day by day and only runs the trip when the phenomenon is guaranteed. Eight people go out in four double kayaks, no headlamps, following the guide's low-voiced instructions. Every stroke lights up the water. Little is said. You paddle slowly. On return, hot tea on the shore while Julio explains what you just saw.
