Paint the Pacific
San Juan del SurVisit location →An afternoon learning to paint the light where the Pacific meets the sky. Take the painting home.
Why this exists.
We start when the light turns. You leave with a canvas.
Sofía has been painting for twenty years. She studied fine arts in Buenos Aires, lived a while in Madrid, and came back to Nicaragua a decade ago with a clear idea: she wanted to paint Pacific light — a specific light, white, salty, unlike any other she knew. She found her place in San Juan del Sur, on a bluff outside town where the cliffs drop straight into the sea.
The experience starts an hour before golden hour. Sofía meets you at a small studio-house near the bluff. Tables, easels, materials for six people maximum. She hands you a 30 by 40 canvas, brushes, paints. You don't need to know how to paint. Most guests have never painted seriously.
The first half-hour is a short lesson. Sofía doesn't teach advanced technique. She teaches how to see. How to break light into three or four colours. How to decide what to leave out. How to begin without fear of the blank canvas. She talks little. She demonstrates a lot.
Then you paint. Three hours, with breaks. Sofía visits every easel every fifteen or twenty minutes. She corrects with questions, not instructions — 'What do you see there?', 'What happens if you darken this part?'. The light changes while you paint. The painting changes with it.
At the end, a picnic on the bluff as the sun comes down. Wine, cheese, fruit, conversation. Your painting dries beside you. She wraps it so you can carry it home. Most guests finish better than they expected. Almost all of them hang it.

"I paint where the Pacific meets the sky. Then I teach whoever turns up how to see it."
Why San Juan del Sur.
San Juan del Sur is a Pacific town where the cliffs drop straight into the sea and the light has a character of its own — white, salty, distinct. Painters and surfers come for the same reasons: golden hour here lasts longer than seems fair.
