Somoto Canyon: Swim and Jump
Somoto
A day in the Somoto Canyon: hiking, swimming, rock jumps, and floating through turquoise water.
Why this exists.
The water is cold. The adrenaline, high.
The Somoto Canyon is millions of years old but was only scientifically documented in 2004. It's in northern Nicaragua, near the Honduran border. The experience starts with an hour of walking along the river, then you enter the main canyon — a 500-metre stone corridor where you swim long stretches and jump from rocks of varying heights. The guides are locals who know every section. It ends with a traditional northern lunch: free-range chicken, rice, thick tortillas, and cuajada. Confident swimmers only.
