Temazcal Ceremony
MasayaVisit location →A traditional temazcal ceremony — herbal steam sauna — guided by an indigenous elder.
Why this exists.
Three hours inside the earth.
The temazcal is a ceremonial dome-shaped earth sauna where volcanic stones are heated and water with medicinal herbs is poured to produce steam. It's a Mesoamerican practice that predates the Spanish arrival. Don Marcos learned the ceremony from his grandfather and today is one of the few guides in Nicaragua who conducts it. Four cycles of heat with different herbs, songs in Nahuatl, and communal sharing. You come out renewed and exhausted at the same time. A simple meal is shared at the end.
