Traditional Textiles on the Pedal Loom
Catarina
Work on a pedal loom in a Catarina weaving family's workshop and finish a hand-woven band.
Why this exists.
The pedals set the rhythm. You set the design.
Catarina is an artisan town on the highland plateau of the Pueblos Blancos. The González family has been weaving on pedal looms for four generations. The workshop is one large room with three antique looms and shelves full of colored yarn. You'll start by learning to prepare the warp — the process most guests never imagine. Then you'll sit at a loom and learn to coordinate hands and feet to weave a band about twenty centimetres long. It's a hypnotic rhythm. You leave with a real piece you made.
