Night Ascent of Telica Volcano
León
Climb the active crater of Telica Volcano in the afternoon. Sleep on the summit. Watch lava at the crater floor after dark.
Why this exists.
The lava looks best at 3am.
Telica has been active for decades. It's a perfect 1,061-metre cone with a crater that emits sulfurous gases and, on clear nights, a glow of lava at the bottom. The route starts at 2pm and climbs for four hours up an exposed volcanic trail. At the top we set up camp — tents, sleeping pads, hot dinner cooked over fire. After dinner we walk down with headlamps to the crater rim to see it at night. You sleep on the summit. At sunrise we break camp and descend by another trail. Good physical fitness required.
